BJP joins the chorus

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, AUG. 29. The State BJP has demanded that the Government order an enquiry into Monday's violent incidents in the City.

In a statement today, Mr. Ch. Ramachandra Reddy, president, said a probe was necessary as the Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, and the Telugu Desam accused the left-Congress combine of joining hands with the ultras and the latter decried ``unprovoked firing'' by the police. The police were also faulted for failure to provide proper security during the chalo Assembly rally.

Mr. Reddy expressed pain and anguish at yesterday's incidents -- lathi-charge and firing on the protesters and ``high-handedness'' even on senior leaders. It conveyed condolences to the families of persons killed in firing and sympathies to those injured.

The BJP chief also criticised the Congress and the left parties for seriously undermining and scuttling the painstaking peace efforts made by its MLAs to resolve the issue. At a time when the State was battered by heavy rain and normal life was paralysed, it was not proper for any leader or party to adopt an unbudging attitude.

Mr. Ramachandra Reddy said in line with its initiatives to resolve the issue, the Government should agree to roll back enhanced power tariff if the House committee on the issue so recommended, and not disconnect the services of those who fail to pay bills until the House committee report was submitted. The Congress and the left parties should also respect this understanding.
