Civic poll results on Internet

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 23. The results of the panchayat elections in Kerala will be available on the Internet.

The State Election Commission has set up a website, http://www.electionkerala.net, for dissemination of the results.

The State Election Commissioner, Mr. M. S. Joseph, told a press conference that results (of the first phase) would be available from 11 a.m. on September 28. By 4 p.m., all results from the village panchayats were expected. The complete results of block panchayats and district panchayats would be out by 8 p. m.

The Commissioner said that a network of computers (dial up networking) would be used for collecting and disseminating the results. The counting of votes would be held in 226 centres. About 450 computers were being arranged for the counting centres and the district centres.

Mr. Joseph said that the Chief of Information Kerala Mission, Mr. P. V. Unnikrishnan, was leading a team of technicians for this. About 800 trained hands had been deputed for sending data from the counting and district centres. Each counting centre would have two computers. There would be four to five computers at the district centres with telephones, modems and other facilities. All counting centres would also have fax machines.

Media centres would function in Thiruvananthapuram and district centres. The results would be projected on a big screen for public viewing at Palayam in Thiruvananthapuram.

Mr. Joseph later inaugurated the website of the Commission, http://www.seckerala.org.
