Alandur gets Krishna water
By S. Shanker
CHENNAI, SEPT. 23. The long-awaited Krishna water has reached
Alandur. The local body is receiving about five lakh litres a day
from the Metrowater mains and officials say they have been
assured regular supply.
With a depleting ground water table at the Palar headworks, the
municipality has been receiving about 25 LLD against a regular
supply of 55 to 60 LLD (lakh litres per day) during the last two
months. The local body took the initiative along with other local
bodies served by the Alandur-Pallavaram Comprehensive Water
Supply Scheme to instal generators at the headworks and booster
stations to ensure that the water supply did not derail due to
power interruptions.
The municipal chairman, Mr. R. S. Bharati, said the supply could
not be channellised into the 70-lakh litre ground level sump in
New Street as the quantity was too low for the tank's storage.
The Metrowater supply has been regulated and let into the water
mains for redistribution.
Proposals were formulated last year to provide the local body
with one LLD and the policy makers even decided that the local
body could switch to Metrowater supply in December.
Under the scheme the local body was assured about 10 million
litres per day of metrowater, according to Mr. Bharathi.
The local body has a 130 km distribution network served by five
storage tanks, with a total capacity of 62 lakh litres, to serve
an estimated population of 1.65 lakhs. The daily per capita
supply is estimated to be 37.57 litres.
The seven million litre underground tank was constructed at a
cost of Rs. 6.65 crores and the project was designed to benefit
Alandur, St. Thomas Mount, Cowl Bazaar, Meenambakkam, Pammal and
Pozhichalur in the first phase.
`Test supply' commenced on September 16 and Alandur residents
were requested to drain off receipt as it carried the accumulated
dust and dirt in the network.
