British MPs observe fast against animal cruelty in India
LONDON, OCT.2.The British members of Parliament, Mr. Tony Banks,
Mr. John Cummings and Mr. Ashok Kumar, observed fast here on the
Gandhi Jayanthi day today to urge the Indian Prime Minister to
enforce laws to prevent cruelty to animals.
``Gandhi declared that the greatness of a nation could be judged
by the way it treats its animals,'' says Mr. Jason Baker, India
representative of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA).
In a press release, the PETA also urges the Prime Minister to
pass the amendments to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,
which had been pending since 1999. These amendments would raise
the penalty for animal abuse substantially.
