A novel celebration
By Our Special Correspondent
HUBLI, OCT. 2. The Youth Congress workers observed Gandhi Jayanti
in a novel way here on Monday. Instead of indulging in speech
making, they chose to familiarise with khadi and the Gandhian
philosophy.
The Hubli-Dharwad City District Youth Congress contingent, led by
Mr. Sadanand Danganavar, visited the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga
Sangha, a State-level federation of the khadi producing
institutions, not only to know about khadi but also to purchase
khadi on the occasion.
Looking to the interest evinced by the Youth Congress workers in
khadi movement, Mr. B.S.Patil, Chairman of the Federation gave a
special rebate of five per cent on the purchases made by the
workers in addition to the 45 per cent rebate available from
Monday.
Khadi, a Gandhian Mr. Surendra Dani said, was a symbol of
cleanliness and it would be better if the Youth Congress workers
imbibed the same. He said he was glad to note that youth were
evincing interest in khadi.
Chidroopanand Saraswati Swami told the Youth Congress workers
that khadi represented self-reliance and pride of the Indians and
it was time that the youth stopped from falling prey to the
influence of the Western culture. "The time has come to redeem
our old values," he said.
Mr. Sangamesh Halasigi, Principal, BBA College, Hubli, said that
the youth were addicted to "3 D culture" (meaning drink, drugs
and dance). Khadi should inspire them to come back on the right
path, he said.
Mr. A.M.Hindusgeri, Minister for Labour and WAKFs, who
inaugurated the programme, said that khadi was a byword for
sacrifice through which the country had won its freedom. Khadi
was not merely cloth but represented the spirit of sacrifice and
compassion for fellow human beings, he said.
Mr. Patil presided.
Mr. A.M.Hindusgeri, Minister for Labour and WAKFs, inaugurating
`Khadi darshan' for the Youth Congress workers at the Karnataka
Khadi and Gramodyoga Sangha in Hubli on Monday. Mr. Sadanand
Danganavar (left), President, Hubli-Dharwad Youth Congress, Mr.
S.A.Malagali, freedom fighter, Mr. B.S.Patil, Chairman of the
khadi federation, and Chidroopananda Saraswati Swami are seen.
