Cong(I) approached us for support: BJP

By Our Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE, OCT. 2. The BJP State vice- president, Mr. P. S. Sreedharan Pillai, has confirmed that the Congress(I) leaders have approached the BJP leaders seeking support to gain control over hung local bodies.

Addressing a press conference here today, he said the Congress(I) leaders approached us the very same day the KPCC(I) chief, Mr. Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, had made his categorical assertion that his party would not seek the BJP's support for capturing the local bodies.

The BJP leader alleged that the reported statement by the KPCC(I) chief made on Sunday that his party never had or would have any truck with the BJP was the latest one in the series of `blatant lies' by the Congress(I) leadership. In fact, the Congress(I) and the BJP had fought the panchayat elections unitedly in some 15 panchayats including Meenachil, Chirakadavu, Vallikunnu, Beypore, Feroke, Nenmeni, Panamaram, Panathadi and Kuttikol, he said.

The BJP had regional level adjustments with the CPI(M) too in some panchayats, he said. But his party's approach was transparent. The elections, he said, have helped the BJP understand the deceitful attitude of both the Congress(I) and the CPI(M).

The convincing victory of the BJP candidate in Kuruvilangad, who fought the elections with the support of the KC(M) also nullified the wrong perception that a tie-up with the BJP would erode the minority votes, Mr. Pillai added.
