Musical journey down memory lane

MUMBAI, OCT. 2. Four top heroines of the Hindi film industry recreated the age-old magic of the legendary dancing icon Helen by embarking upon a musical journey down memory lane, spanning an era from the fabulous 50s to the naughty 90s here last night.

Indian cinema's glamorous girls - Aishwarya Rai, Raveena Tandon, Shilpa Shetty and Urmila Matondkar - performed various numbers featuring Helen, which turned out to be a visual delight for the select audience at the Andheri Sports Complex.

Aptly titled ``Helen - the golden girl - the concert of a life- time'', the three-hour show was organised by the television company, Channel Nine Hold, to be aired on DD Metro later this month.

In spite of heavy rain, the concert began on a nostalgic note with the ``Rangeela'' girl Urmila Matondkar revisiting the 1950s with ``Mera naam Chin Chin Choo'' from ``Howrah Bridge'' and some other memorable songs.

Cut to the swinging 60s, with Aishwarya belting out ``Mujhe dekhiye main koi'' from the film ``Lutera'' followed by ``Unki gali me dil kho gaya''.

The sizzling 70s and electrifying 80s arrived with Shilpa Shetty sending the crowd into a frenzy with a scintillating performance of the immortal number ``Mehbooba Mehbooba'' from ``Sholay'', a sensuous ``Mungda Mungda'' from ``Inkaar'' and ``Aa Jaane Ja''.

Raveena danced to the tunes of ``Karley Pyar'' from ``Talaash'', ``Piya tu aab to aaja'' from ``Caravan'' and ``Is duniya me jeena ho to'' from ``Gumnaam''.

Finally, the dancing icon herself made an appearance with a number from ``Khamoshi'' ``E mauj me le ke chal baja'' which had marked her return to silver screen in the 90's.

Later, an overwhelmed Helen accepted tributes from the joyous audience in an emotionally-choked voice.

Noted film personalities Sunil Dutt, Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu praised the dancing sensation of yesteryears.
