Pak. bans import of Indian onion

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, OCT. 4 Pakistan has banned the import of onion from India to safeguard the interests of its farmers as the Government is anticipating a bumper crop this year.

Quoting official sources the English daily, The News, reported that domestic production next month was expected to exceed the demand. The total production of onion in Pakistan was estimated at 1.37 million tonnes against the national consumption of 1.30 million tonnes.

The report also said that onion import from India last year led to a sharp fall in its price in the domestic market and discouraged farmers from going for the crop.

Last year 301 tonnes of onion were imported from India at cost and freight price of $150 per tonne in Lahore and 750 tonnes at cost and freight price of $155 per tonne in Karachi.
