Sharif's plea rejected

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, OCT. 4. The Pakistan Supreme Court today rejected the appeal filed by the former Prime Minister, Mr. Nawaz Sharif, to direct the Sindh High Court not to make the apex court judgment on the October 12 coup as part of the plane hijacking case.

In its judgement on the October 12 coup, the Supreme Court had upheld the Army action invoking the `doctrine of necessity.' Mr. Sharif had filed an appeal in the apex court urging to direct the Sindh High Court not to make the coup judgement part of the plane hijack case.

The Sindh High Court is seized of an appeal from Mr. Sharif against the judgement of the Special Court convicting him on charges of plane hijack and terrorism. The Government has filed an appeal seeking enhancement of the sentence awarded to Mr. Sharif. With the rejection of the appeal by the Supreme Court, the case in the Sindh High Court is expected to come up for hearing on Friday.
