Swamy seeks ban on DK

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, OCT. 4. The Janata Party president, Dr. Subramanian Swamy, today called for a ban on the Dravidar Kazhagam for its ``connections with the LTTE'' and the involvement of some of its members in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination.

Talking to reporters, Dr. Swamy said he had already written to the Union Home Minister, Mr. L.K. Advani, in this regard.

Dr. Swamy wanted the DK general secretary, Mr. K. Veeramani, to be interrogated by the multi-disciplinary monitoring agency set up in the Action Taken Report on the Jain Commission findings.

The Jain Commission, he said, had identified five of the 26 persons convicted in the Rajiv assassination case as belonging to the DK. It had also identified four persons of the TNRT and TNLA in jail as having been trained by the LTTE and owing allegiance to the DK. ``These persons the sandalwood smuggler Veerappan wants released in the Rajkumar kidnap episode,'' he said.

Dr. Swamy urged the Congress(I) to cut off all forms of association with the DK. The Congress(I) president, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, owed an explanation to the people as to how she permitted Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ms. Sheila Dixit, to be seen with Mr. Veeramani at public functions.

Evidence before the Jain Commission pointed to the involvement of members and sympathisers of the DK in the assassination. The then SIT chief, Mr. D. R. Karthikeyan, in a note submitted to the Commission, had stated that accused Arivu and Irumborai were ``members/supporters'' of the Veeramani group (of DK) and accused Suseendran was working with the Ramakrishnan group. Subasundaram (another accused) was also a supporter of the Veeramani group. Both Veeramani and Ramakrishnan had visited Jaffna and met Prabhakaran, the note had said.
