Clash at municipal meeting: BJP, CPI(M) demand probe

By Our Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD, OCT. 14. The BJP and the CPI(M), in separate statements, today demanded probe into the violent incidents took place during the municipal council meeting held on Friday to swear-in the vice-president.

The BJP district committee today urged the authorities to take action against the "anti-social elements" who had entered the council hall and attacked its council party leader, Mr. N. Shivarajan. The meeting also condemned the attack on Mr. Shivarajan's house on Friday night.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) council party leader, Mr. K. S. Gopalakrishnan, in a letter to the Minister for Local Administration, Mr. Paloly Mohammed Kutty, urged him to order an inquiry into the incident.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan said he had informed the municipal council secretary on Friday morning, through the chairperson, about a possible violence during the meeting and had demanded adequate security arrangement. Since this was not done, "anti-social elements" brought from outside indulged in violence, he said.

He said the proceedings during the day was illegal. Instead of swearing in the vice-president during the council meeting by authorised person, it was done at a public function, which was violative of respective rules, he said.
