India opens consulate in German State
BERLIN, OCT. 16. An honorary consulate of India has been set up
in the North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW) State of Germany, home to
maximum number of Non- Resident Indians (NRIs).
German philanthropist and a friend of India, Mr. H.D. Deichmann,
yesterday assumed office of the Honorary Consul at Essen, which
has been set up in view of the impending closure of the Indian
mission in Bonn after the shifting of the Indian Embassy to
Berlin and planned opening of a new consulate in Munich.
NRW is Germany's industrial heartland and home to the Indo-German
Chamber of Commerce at its capital Dusseldorf.
Besides its embassy in Berlin, India now has two consulates in
Frankfurt and Hamburg and an honorary consul at Stuttgart.
With the functioning of the consul in Essen and the scheduled
opening of a consulate in Munich sometime early next year, Indian
interests would be represented throughout Germany. - PTI
