No pardon for Tommy, reiterates Wahid

By Amit Baruah

SINGAPORE, OCT. 16. The Indonesian President, Mr. Abdurrahman Wahid's unscheduled meeting with Mr. Tommy Suharto, the convicted son of Gen. Suharto, will not have a bearing on the President's decision to refuse pardon to the younger Suharto.

A spokesman for Mr. Wahid said today that the President was consistent in rejecting Mr. Tommy Suharto's appeal for a pardon, after being convicted in a corruption case.

Ms. Siti Hardijanti ``Tutut'' Indra Rukmana, Gen. Suharto's eldest daughter, was also present at the surprise meeting between Mr. Wahid and Mr. Tommy Suharto at a South Jakarta hotel over the weekend.

At a time, when Mr. Wahid himself has been going hammer and tongs at the Suharto family, this meeting is bound to raise a fresh round of questions in the country.

``I'm afraid there were no concessions discussed in the meeting with Tommy,'' Mr. Wahid's spokesman added.

However, what was discussed by the President and two leading lights of the Suharto family is not clear.
