By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 16. The Ombudsman for local bodies has directed the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation secretary to submit a report on the environmental and health problems created by the garbage processing plant at Vilappilsala.

The Ombudsman has also sought details on the functioning of the plant and the reported assault on reporters at the factory site. The case was admitted on the basis of media reports.

The Corporation Secretary has been asked to report in person in connection with another case relating to the unauthorised construction of a building in the Kothuval Street, Chalai, by a Corporation employee. Taking note of the seriousness of the case, the Division Bench, comprising the chairman, Mr. P.A. Mohammed, and Dr. D. Babu Paul, expressed strong displeasure over the Corporation secretary's failure to appear before the Ombudsman or take action against the employee.

The Ombudsman has issued an order to realise an amount of Rs. 3,000 from the beneficiary committee following detection of irregularities in the construction of a road by the Ottoor grama panchayat. It also ordered payment of Rs. 500 to the petitioner towards litigation expense.

The verdict was issued by a full bench comprising Mr. P.A. Mohammed, Dr. D. Babu Paul and Mr. T.V. Balan.
