Debts drive six of family to suicide

ANANTAPUR, OCT. 19. Six persons from three families allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday night in the district, mainly due to financial problems. The deceased included four women and a 1- year-old girl.

According to the police, the problem of debts due to successive crop failure had driven the family of Kuruba Sudhakar (30) to suicide by torching themselves at Krishnamreddypalli in Anantapur rural mandal. Along with his wife, Ms. Gangadevi (28) and daughter Navya (1), he doused them with kerosene and set them ablaze.

While Navya died on the spot, Sudhakar breathed his last on way to hospital. Ms. Gangadevi was battling for life in the Anantapur General Hospital. According to her death declaration and villagers' account, they had four acres of land and had cultivated groundnut. But the crop was a failure this year too due to pest attack.

He was learnt to have bought a house for Rs. 50,000 expecting a good yield this year but the last three years' crop failure continued. As the debtors mounted pressure for clearance of debt the family decided to end their lives. The couple's another daughter, Hema (3), was saved as she was away with her grandparents.

In Nesevaripalli in Chilamattur mandal, three persons of a family committed suicide by consuming pesticide due to family and financial problems. According to reports, Mr. Shankar Reddy (42), his wife, Bhagyamma (38), and mother, Ms. Nanjamma (70), consumed a pesticide last night.

At Gandlaparthi in Rapthadu mandal, Ms. Saraswathi (15) committed suicide by consuming pesticide due to financial problems of the family, it is said.
