Venkateshwar Rao sets record

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD OCT 19. L. Venkateshwar Rao of Andhra Pradesh hurled the shot to a distance of 14.75 metres to create a new meet record in the event for boys under 18 on the first day of the South zone junior athletic championships which was inaugurated at the Lal Bahadur stadium here today.

The previous meet record was in the name of Lijo N. Joy of Kerala who had chalked up a distance of 13.87 metres in 1999. The surprising aspect of the performance was that Venkateshwar Rao has had no formal coaching till now.

In the 110 metres hurdles for boys under 18 Kiran Prasad of Kerala also created a new meet record by clocking 15.0 seconds. The previous record was in the name of B. Ramesh Babu of TN who had timed 15.1 seconds in 1996 and it was later equalled by P. Senthil Kumar also of TN in 1997.
