TDP poser to Rosaiah on World Bank report

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, OCT. 21. The Telugu Desam Party has advised the Congress(I) leader, Mr. K. Rosaiah, not to malign the Chandrababu Naidu Government just by citing a few `convenient' paragraphs from the World Bank report.

It noted that Mr. Rosaiah conveniently ignored the same report which also spoke about the `sincere efforts' of the Government to address the question of poverty eradication.

"This is nothing but a deliberate attempt at creating confusion among the people for political gain", said Messrs. Lal Jan Basha, general secretary, V. Tulasiram, vice-president, P. Ramulu, MLA, and R. Chandrasekhar Reddy, spokesman, at a press meet here on Saturday.

If the State still wallowed in abject poverty, as claimed by Mr. Rosaiah, much of the blame should go to the Congress which ruled the State for so long. The TDP leaders said World Bank funds were being put to optimal use unlike under the Congress rule when they were squandered to favour some contractors who quoted 200 to 300 per cent excess bids.

The TDP leaders said none denied that poverty was a major problem; none could also deny that the Government was making all possible efforts to address the challenge. They argued that the report mentioned 1.13 crore white ration cards which benefited about five crore population only to underscore the need and justification to fund poverty eradication initiatives and not to project the State in a bad light.

Mr. Chandrasekhar Reddy declined to comment on the critical comments made by the BJP leaders at their State executive meeting in Godavarikhani, saying the TDP has no information in this regard.
