On the IT highway
Music listening and teaching now happen on the web.
K.N.SASHIKIRAN touches on some of the popular sites.
CYBERSPACE HAS considerably taken prominence in a traditional art
form like Carnatic music. It's no wonder that information is
available in plenty through more than a dozen websites which are
catering for commoners basically and a few for commercials as
well. Some of the prominent Carnatic music websites other than
Carnatica.com are www.Carnaticmusic.com, www.sangeetham.com,
www.kutcheribuzz.com. There are several other web sites which
have sections on Carnatic music. There are a few other websites
which are maintained by the artistes themselves or maintained by
rasikas for basic information. Carnaticmusic.com, a part of
Satyam online, has been in vogue since 1998 and has been focusing
on providing information. It has come out with several innovative
concepts. The site has also got an online music lesson section,
one of the most popular sites in Carnatic music. Sangeetham.com,
a brain child of the young vocal star Sanjay Subrahmanyan, is
popular among the Carnatic music lovers. A lively and interactive
site with the music community, it has information for music
lovers and also spicy discussions by any visitor to the site on
various aspects pertaining to the ragas, kutcheris in its popular
raga and kutcheri talk section.
Southindianmusic.com started by Prof. Veerapandian covers certain
basic aspects on music with a special section on Tamil music. The
promoter has also made attempts to fuse Western notation and
interpretation through a mini keyboard for several musical
compositions/aspects.
Chennaionline.com though not a focused music site still covers
the day-to- day musical happenings in the city and is coming out
with special promotions for the Music Season 2000.
Numtv.com of Pentamedia has special sections on music and dance.
This is one of the few sites with a lot of visual and audio
content.
Saregama.com and hamaracd.com group of RPG is predominantly an
online music store with a huge collection that has a prominent
Carnatic music section. A hamara CD concept is a boon to the
Music Industry. Fabmart.com, musicmagazine.com, induslive.com and
esakti.com also are part of the network.
