Music listening and teaching now happen on the web. K.N.SASHIKIRAN touches on some of the popular sites.

CYBERSPACE HAS considerably taken prominence in a traditional art form like Carnatic music. It's no wonder that information is available in plenty through more than a dozen websites which are catering for commoners basically and a few for commercials as well. Some of the prominent Carnatic music websites other than Carnatica.com are www.Carnaticmusic.com, www.sangeetham.com, www.kutcheribuzz.com. There are several other web sites which have sections on Carnatic music. There are a few other websites which are maintained by the artistes themselves or maintained by rasikas for basic information. Carnaticmusic.com, a part of Satyam online, has been in vogue since 1998 and has been focusing on providing information. It has come out with several innovative concepts. The site has also got an online music lesson section, one of the most popular sites in Carnatic music. Sangeetham.com, a brain child of the young vocal star Sanjay Subrahmanyan, is popular among the Carnatic music lovers. A lively and interactive site with the music community, it has information for music lovers and also spicy discussions by any visitor to the site on various aspects pertaining to the ragas, kutcheris in its popular raga and kutcheri talk section.

Southindianmusic.com started by Prof. Veerapandian covers certain basic aspects on music with a special section on Tamil music. The promoter has also made attempts to fuse Western notation and interpretation through a mini keyboard for several musical compositions/aspects.

Chennaionline.com though not a focused music site still covers the day-to- day musical happenings in the city and is coming out with special promotions for the Music Season 2000.

Numtv.com of Pentamedia has special sections on music and dance. This is one of the few sites with a lot of visual and audio content.

Saregama.com and hamaracd.com group of RPG is predominantly an online music store with a huge collection that has a prominent Carnatic music section. A hamara CD concept is a boon to the Music Industry. Fabmart.com, musicmagazine.com, induslive.com and esakti.com also are part of the network.
