Antony for deployment of Army in Kannur

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 5. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. A.K. Antony, has demanded the deployment of Army in Kannur to safeguard the life and property of people in the context of the political violence and the failure of the State police in law enforcement in the district.

In a strongly-worded, yet restrained statement, here today, Mr. Antony said the situation had come to such a pass that the police themselves were at the receiving end of the violence in Kannur.

``It has become certain that the police cannot function in a fair and independent manner as long as the CPI(M) continues to handle the Home portfolio. The Government has virtually paralysed the force by frequently transferring officials who tried to function impartially. The attempts of the Chief Minister, Mr. E.K. Nayanar, in the last four years to protect his wayward violent partymen have converted Kannur into a battleground,'' Mr. Antony said.
