Sri Lanka defeats Ireland
CHRISTCHURCH, DEC. 5. Powered by a half century (52) from the
Player of the Match, Hirochi Aheysinghe, Sri Lanka notched up its
first win in the Cricinfo women's World Cup here on Tuesday,
beating the winless Ireland by 10 runs.
The Lankan women posted 129 in 47.3 overs with Abeysinghe making
52 off 108 balls with four hits to the fence.
Ireland at one stage seemed comfortably placed at 87 for three,
but Chamani Seneviratne (three for 18) and Abheysinghe (two for
17) struck at frequent intervals and the Irish women lost their
last seven wickets for a meagre 32 runs.
On Wednesday, the two most impressive teams in the competition,
India and Australia, will clash in a key match.
Brief scores: Sri Lanka 129 in 47.3 overs (Hirochi Abeysinghe 52)
bt Ireland 119 in 49.5 overs (Karen Young 30, Chamani Seneviratne
three for 18).
