Karnataka humbles Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI, DEC. 5. Host and holder Tamil Nadu suffered a 33-run
defeat against Karnataka in the Subbiah Pillai Trophy one-day
cricket tournament at the MAC stadium on Tuesday.
It was a case of Tamil Nadu conceding too many runs and
thereafter failing to gather as many in its chase. Losing the
toss seemed a blessing in disguise for Karnataka, which was also
down two wickets for no runs before building up its innings.
Mithun Beerala 53 (4x4, 1x6) and Vijay Bharadwaj 47 (3x4, 1x6),
with a 101-run third wicket stand, set the platform for raising
the challenging total of 171 in the allotted 32 overs (the overs
were revised to 32-a-side after play started over three hours
behind schedule because of wet ground conditions). Mediumpacer
Kumaran was Tamil Nadu's best as he picked up three wickets, two
off successive balls in his very first over.
Tamil Nadu failed to make a brisk start and lost wickets at
frequent intervals. Steady bowling, particularly from left-arm
spinner Santosh Vodeyaraj (three for 16) in the later phase, and
crisp fielding helped Karnataka restrict Tamil Nadu to 138 and
collect two points for the win.
