'Tiny' gestures, big help

SAVE A rupee a day. That isn't asking anything big. But it goes a long way to help someone, somewhere in need.

A simple idea. But it has come in handy for CAN-STOP's latest idea - to connect concerned children with cancer-afflicted ones, the Children for Children Fund.

CAN-STOP (Cancer Support therapy to Overcome Pain), a community out-reach programme of Sundaram Medical Foundation Dr. Rangarajan Memorial Hospital, launched the Fund on November 14. The aim was to introduce the idea of children saving on rupee a day for a period of three months for the ill at the Haematology Department of the Egmore Children's Hospital.

``We would like to encourage school children to take part by making their own papier mache piggy banks,'' says Dr.Vijayabharathi Rangarajan, founder, CAN-STOP. ``This could be initiated by schools or, CAN-STOP volunteers could come during the craft period and show children how to make them and also explain the purpose behind the project,'' she adds. CAN-STOP is also approaching parents to involve and sensitise them to cancer- related issues. This way, CAN-STOP plans to enlist the support of the whole family in it's crusade against cancer-causing lifestyles.
