Judges fail in bid to patch up 2 factions

NALLELLA (Warangal dt.), DEC. 10. The District Judges on Sunday faced a bitter experience in this village of Kuravi mandal when they tried to settle court cases between two factions here through a compromise and had no option but to leave the cases take their logical end as their attempt failed.

The District Judge, Mr. M.E.N. Patrudu, and two other Additional District Judges could not effect a compromise between a youth, Bixapathi, and his estranged wife, Suguna, due to the adamant stand taken by the woman. And settling this case was important because the fate of another dozen cases hinged on it. With the case of the couple not being resolved, all remaining cases were left to continue being tried in the court.

Bixapathi's father, Mr. Meghya Naik, represents the Congress and is a follower of the Dornakal MLA, Mr. D.S. Redya Naik, and Suguna is supported by the former village sarpanch, Mr. G. Suraiah of the TDP. There are a dozen cases of attacks and counter attacks registered against both Mr. Meghya Naik and Mr. Suraiah's supporters and all of them have a political colour. When the District Judge went to the village, Mr. Meghya Naik's supporters demanded that the issue of Bixapathi be resolved first. Mr. Meghya Naik and his son are demanding that Suguna leave the village as she was allegedly of questionable character. They were willing to pay for her maintenance for which she had petitioned court and got the decree. But, Suguna is unwilling to leave the village or divorce Bixapathi. She has not even filed a case of bigamy against Bixapathi although he has married another woman after sending her back to her parents.

The district judge decided to try Bixapathi and Suguna along with their relatives in camera and assigned the First Additional District Judge, Mr. T. Madan Mohan Reddy, for the task in an adjacent building. As both parties stuck to their stands, the judges had no option but to leave law take its own course. With this, the remaining cases which were dependent on the dispute, including a case pending between Mr. Meghya Naik, a tribal, and Mr. Suraiah under provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, will also be carried to their logical end.

Mr. Meghya Naik, who claims the support of all tribals in the village, resisted the proceedings immediately after they got under way. The group did not turn up for the meeting which was held under a tree and it was only after much persuasion that Mr. Meghya Naik showed up with his supporters.
