Anuradha, Eesha in joint lead

By Raghunandan Gokhale

MUMBAI, DEC. 10. On a `Black Day' for the players with white pieces, Anuradha Beniwal (Haryana) and Eesha Karvade (Maharashtra) emerged joint leaders with four points each in the Girl's section of the National sub- junior chess championship here on Sunday.

In the boys section, Tamil Nadu's top seeded M.R. Venkatesh (4) will slug it out with team-mate R.S. Prasanna (4) to decide the leader on Tuesday after a rest day.

Amruta Mokal and Anuradha were pitted in Sicilian Scavenengian variation and the game took the path of famous 24th game between Karpov and Kasparov played in 1985 during their second match for the World Championship. Amruta's attack could not dent Anuradha's active defence and soon the Haryana player turned the tables completely to pocket the point in 30 moves.

Kruttika Nadig was white against Eesha Karvade (4) in Sicilian Defence. Kruttika's passive play resulted in tiny Eesha obtaining a strong Central passer which ultimately decided the issue in 52 moves in Eesha's favour.

The battle between Tania Sachdev of Delhi and C. Delphin of TN ended peacefully after just twenty moves when both the players thought the position as equal in Kin's Indian Attack.

Top seeded Venkatesh did not have to exert himself against Yashpal Singh (Chhattisgarh) who played indifferently in the Irregular Opening and found himself in early trouble. Venkatesh broke through the center and queened his central pawn on 25th move to practically finish the fight.

Second seeded Deepan Chakravarty of West Bengal was frustrated by Ranvir Bhatti's patient defence. The second seed finally agreed to share the point in 52 moves of Semi-Slav Defence.

Giant killer Yashodhan Gogte of Maharashtra blundered a piece in an advantageous position and finally lost the game to Internationally rated R.S. Prasanna in 50 moves of Modern Defence.
