Inspector, head constable suspended

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL, DEC. 12. The Inspector of Nandyal Two Town, Mr. A. Subramanyam, and the Head Constable, Mr. S. Hanumantha Reddy, were placed under suspension on the charge of harassing an employee of the Information Department framing false charges against him.

The Superintendent of Police, Mr. P.S.R. Anjaneyulu, told The Hindu that the charges against the two police officials were proved during the inquiry and were recommended to the Inspector General of Police, Rayalaseema Region, for suspension. Four constables who had been a party to the offence would be shifted.

According to reports, the police picked up Mr. Sivakumar, an operator in the Information department at Nandyal and his friend Mr. Ranga Swamy, on the charge of dealing in fake currency. The police allegedly tortured the two and demanded Rs 60,000 as bribe for their freedom and threatened a larger punishment if the deal was made public. However, Mr. Sivakumar managed to borrow Rs 20,000 from a money lender and paid to the police and promised to give some more amount later.

As the police mounted pressure on Mr. Sivakumar to pay the remaining amount, he complained to higher officials and the local Minister. Following this, the Deputy SP at Nandyal, Mr. Mahendra Reddy, inquired into the matter and established the fraud of the local police. The police were forced to return the amount to the victim.

Meanwhile, the SP in a wireless conference with the police officials across the district warned officers and men of serious action against any misdeed. He asked the staff to be careful since the police were engaged in serious work of controlling faction crime which required the public support. The incidents of highhanded behaviour would lead to erosion of the image of police in the eyes of people.
