Bisquare offers STB technology for DTH
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, DEC. 12. An Indian technology company, Bisquare, is
offering customisable technology for set top boxes meant for the
much-awaited direct to home (DTH) television transmission. It is
already negotiating with leading manufacturers and broadcasters
for implementing the DTH experience.
The Bisquare Managing Director, Mr. Ramendra Baoni, said India
needed to review its DTH intentions in the light of market needs.
Technological gaps in the bill need to be looked at, he points
out, as the legislation is not quite clear on the issue of
technology standards to be applied along with the need for
encryption of data and text.
Seeking to dispel confusion over the use of the set top box
(STB), he told The Hindu that the DTH service needed an STB to
receive and decode the encrypted digital transmissions. The term
STB is also being used by some manufacturers to refer to the
Internet TV device but internationally the digital television
receiver is called the set top box.
Regarding the technology to be used for DTH transmission, he
said, the Government had approved the world wide standard of DVB
(digital video broadcast committee) for this country.
