Maharashtra to give details of Thackeray's remarks
By Mahesh Vijapurkar
MUMBAI, DEC. 20. Maharashtra would provide a detailed note to the
Centre on the utterances of Mr. Bal Thackeray and his writings in
the Saamana on ``defranchisement of Muslims'' even as police have
been given a free hand to deal with it.
The Chief Minister, Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh, and Mr. Chagan
Bhujbal, Deputy Chief Minister, told this to newspersons here
today. They described Mr. Thackeray's views on Muslim
defranchisement as ``unconstitutional'' and that the Centre
should know about this. The Prime Minister and the Union Home
Minister would be sent letters on Mr. Thackeray's contention
which has ``certainly hurt the Muslim sentiment,'' Mr. Bhujbal
said. Mr. Thackeray was not being provided with security to
enable him to speak and write like this, he said.
PTI reports:
Mr. Thackeray said today that he was firm on his demand. ``If
appeasement of Muslims is only for votes, then is it not the
right of the Government to clamp restrictions on such vote-
banks?'' Mr. Thackeray asked in the editorial in Saamna.
