Strike continues in Nepal
KATHMANDU, JAN. 2. The second day of a two-day nation-wide
general strike in Nepal called by nine Left-wing parties to
demand the resignation of the Prime Minister, Mr. Girija Prasad
Koirala, continued without incident today, officials said.
The Leftist parties called the strike to demand Mr. Koirala's
resignation for failing to maintain law and order, curb
corruption and control inflation. The streets were deserted today
as motorists stayed off the roads for fear of being stoned, while
most shops in the capital remained shut. Government employees for
the second day in succession had to walk to their offices due to
the absence of transport services.
No trust vote on Thursday
A debate and vote on a no-confidence motion listed against Mr.
Koirala by disgruntled Government MPs will take place later this
week, it was announced today.
Parliamentarians from the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) will
discuss the internal party matter on Thursday, its parliamentary
party secretary, Mr. Benup Raj Prasai, said.
