Burglar gang arrested

HYDERABAD, JAN. 2. The city police have apprehended a gang of house burglars which was allegedly involved in several offences under the Malakpet and Saidabad police stations' limits during the last two years.

The members of the gang -- S.A. Saber, Md. Bhikam, Mohd. Yousuf Jani, along with their leader, Mohd Ibrahim -- were apprehended by the South Zone team of CCS, headed by Inspector, Mr. Syed Moinuddin.

According to the City Police Commissioner, Mr. P. Ramulu, these offenders, who plied autorickshaws during day time, used to survey the localities, identify locked houses in the evening, and commit offences in the night.

During interrogation, the gang confessed of having burgled 21 houses within the Malakpet and Saidabad police stations' limits between 1998 and 2000.

The property stolen by them was worth Rs. 12.50 lakhs and included gold jewellery weighing about 1.6 kgs, silver articles weighing about 11 kgs, one air pistol, 10 cameras, one television, tape recorders and 16 wrist watches. So far, Rs. 10.55 lakhs worth of stolen property was recovered from the accused at their instance and efforts were on to recover the remaining property, he said.

The leader of the gang, Mohd. Ibrahim, was earlier involved in six property offences and was also convicted in those cases. He came out of jail in 1987 after serving sentences and formed the group of burglars, Mr. Ramulu said.
