Suburban transport system to be completed in a year

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JAN. 10. The Multi-modal Suburban Transport System (MSTS), having two streams of traffic on Lingampalli-Hyderabad- Secunderabad and Secunderabad-Falaknuma lines, is proposed to be completed within a year after its approval by the Railway Board. An MoU for the project was signed by the Railway Ministry and the State Government on September 25 last year.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. N. Krithivasan, General Manager of South Central Railway, said two proposals for MSTS under Phase-I had been sent to the Railway Board on November 11. While part I of phase-I covers the Secunderabad-Falaknuma section at a cost of Rs.29 crores, the part II covers Lingampalli-Hyderabad- Secunderabad at a cost of Rs.31 crores, both to be equally shared by the Railways and the State Government.

A reconnaissance survey of the sections has been undertaken by the Railways in coordination with the Government. A joint task force comprising officials from the Railways and the State Government has been formed for implementation of the project. The project involves opening of 10 new stations and electrification of Secunderabad-Falaknuma and Sanathnagar-Falaknuma sections. A combined ticket both for travelling in train and bus will be offered.

Mr. Krithivasan said the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation had decided to open food plazas in 13 stations and two of them would be at Secunderabad and Hyderabad. The decision to lease out railway space for commercial exploitation, has evoked good response.

On the complaint that the contractors of car and two-wheeler parking spaces at railway stations were fleecing the people, the General Manager and other officials promised to look into the problem.
