TNPL to expand capacity

BANGALORE, JAN. 10. The Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers (TNPL) is set to upgrade its manufacturing facility to increase production by 25 per cent to 2.25 lakh tonnes, the Chairman and Managing Director Mr. N. Narayanan, said here today.

The investment in upgradation and capacity expansion will be Rs. 15 crores and will be met from internal sources, he said. TNPL's capacity utilisation was now 105 per cent. In the nine months up to December 31, the company achieved production of 1.42 lakh tonnes of newsprint, printing and writing paper. It was also augmenting its pulp mill capacity.

``The capacity expansion will enable to TNPL to achieve a turnover of Rs. 750 crores by 2002-03 against the anticipated Rs. 580 crores this fiscal year '' Mr Narayanan said. TNPL which used environment friendly bagasse (sugarcane waste product) remained the largest plant producing paper and newsprint from a single location.

TNPL is reworking its marketing strategy and has broadened its exports to 17 countries with its brand name products retailed in Australia, the CMD said. The export percentage would be around 19 per cent this year, compared 13 per cent last fiscal year.

Mr. Narayanan earlier attended the all India release of TNPL's new versatile office stationery product OS 2000 designed for computer printers and other office requirements.
