Bihar boxer shown the door for not shaving
By Nandakumar Marar
PIMPRI, JAN. 10. Bihar's flyweight boxer S.K. Fahim suffered the
ignominy of being disqualified for not shaving. He stepped into
the ring for the quarterfinal bout against Bengal's Sarfaroz Alam
in the 47th Senior National Boxing Championships, was sent back
to the blue corner by the referee, Mr. Parmar, who waived a hand
across his own face to signal the reason for the disqualification
to the ringside judges.
Fahim had been ruled not eligible to fight because of a stubble
on his chin, for attempting to defy the rule that every
competitor has to shave before stepping into the ring. The logic
behind the ruling is simple - hairs on the jaw can result in the
skin peeling off the face after a punch in the course of a fight.
Fahim was disqualified because he forgot to take care of his own
safety.
The Bihar team management has filed a written protest.
The third bout of the day saw Tamil Nadu's flyweight Karl Marx
defeating Olympian Suresh Singh of the Central Industrial
Security Force (CISF) when the referee stopped the contest in the
second round of the quarterfinal. The reason being a cut suffered
by Suresh Singh over his left eye, forcing a RSC due to injury.
Marx must consider him fortunate to have survived two rounds
against the stocky international, let alone win it.
