BJP demands CBI probe into bond scheme

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, JAN. 13. Alleging irregularities, the BJP City unit has demanded that the State Government order a CBI enquiry into the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's Municipal Bond Scheme.

A meeting of the office-bearers of the unit and the City-based legislators of the party here today said there were large-scale irregularities in the execution of development works taken up under the Rs.125-crore scheme.

While several programmes remained on paper, the works executed were substandard, the meeting said, and passed a resolution demanding that the Government order a CBI inquiry into them.

In another resolution, the meeting demanded a White Paper on the work of the Bangalore Agenda Task Force, which was constituted last year.

The meeting criticised the BMP for not taking up any development work despite a promise made by the Chief Minister, Mr. S.M.Krishna, in this regard. It criticised the BMP for not giving adequate attention to filling up of potholes and repairing of roads in the City.

Expressing concern at the newly-imposed parking fee in the City, the meeting said it was an unnecessary burden on vehicle owners, and it should be withdrawn immediately.

The Union Minister for Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Ananth Kumar, who inaugurated the meeting, said there had been no considerable development works in the City during the past 10 years. Though it had become the ``IT capital of the country'', the BMP had failed to provide the necessary infrastructure.

Mr. Kumar said the HUDCO and other financial institutions had sanctioned Rs. 1,600 crores for taking up the works on roads, but the BMP had not utilised the amount.

He said the BJP would contest the coming elections to the urban local bodies without tying up with any other party. The office- bearers of the party's Mahila Morcha, SC/ST unit and Minorities Wing also participated in the meeting.

The legislators who participated in the meeting included Messrs. R.Ashok, Katta Subramanya Naidu, P.C.Mohan, K.N.Subba Reddy, S.Suresh Kumar, and Ramachandra Gowda.
