Move to promote technology incubators

BANGALORE, JAN. 23. A Bangalore declaration on a framework for incubating technology-centred industries is likely to be drafted at the three-day international workshop, ITBI India 2001, here on ``Technology business incubators in India'' from January 29.

Mr. B.S.Patil, Principal Secretary, Department of Commerce and Industries, told presspersons today that the declaration would be forwarded to the Union and State governments for follow-up action. Experts from the U.K., the U.S., Europe, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, China and Hong Kong would speak on their experiences in incubating hitech businesses at the workshop.

He said the technology incubators would provide a number of services to start-ups by techno-entrepreneurs. These included business development, technological support, marketing assistance, legal and IPR-related assistance, venture capital support and interconnectivity. They would help in reducing the gestation period, promote faster growth of enterprises and reduce the failure rate.

The workshop would be organised by the Asia Pacific Centre for Technology Transfer (APCTT) of the UNDP, the Department of Science and Technology of the Union Government and the Karnataka Department of Industries and Commerce. The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and S.J. College of Engineering, Mysore, were the co-sponsors.

The Union Minister for Human Resources, Science and technology, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, was expected to inaugurate the event. The Chief Minister, Mr. S.M. Krishna, would preside over the function. Prof. U.R. Rao, Member, Space Commission, would deliver the keynote address. The other speakers included the Minister for Large and Medium-Scale Industries, Mr. R.V.Deshpande.

The focus areas of the workshop would be information technology, biotechnology, new materials, food and agro-industry and hitech manufacturing.
