Get dolled
A PUDGY sumo wrestler, an enchanting oriental beauty decked in
traditional finery, young valiant warriors and cute kids. Walk
into the Birla Science Centre and dig yourself into the
captivating world of Japanese dolls.
The `Dolls of Japan' exhibition is where the legends, myths and
traditions come alive. It's replete with the heroic tales of
Samurai warriors and of mythical emperors who, with golden eagle
perched on their bow, destroyed enemies. Hey, it's not about
killing and getting killed alone, for there is beauty and love
too. Behold the beauty in `Hanagatami' toy where the young lady
with a basketful of flowers is seen indulging in a playful chase
with her beau.
The fine craftsmanship boasts of every minutest details down to
the facial expressions which seem to infuse life into the dolls.
Watch out for `Okina' doll and for the discerning nuances of a
grey haired old man dancing to celebrate his longevity. In Japan,
dolls have been a part of every day life since ancient times.
Ever saw kites that resemble a sumo wrestler or a butterfly? Then
take a stroll along the Japanese kite exhibition and get allured
by the collection of kites which come in a riot of colours,
shapes and sizes. The exhibition is open till January 31.
