China, France register different intensities
BEIJING, JAN. 26. China's seismological bureau has measured the
intensity of the Gujarat earthquake at 7.8 on the Richter scale,
higher than 6.9 reported by its Indian counterpart.
China's official news agency, quoting the bureau, said the quake
measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, hit Gujarat at 11.16 a.m.
Beijing time (8.46 hrs IST).
The epicentre was located at 23.2 degrees north latitude and 70.0
degrees east longitude, slightly different from the 23.6 latitude
and 69.8 longitude given by the seismological department in New
Delhi.
According to an AFP report quoting France's earth sciences
observatory in Strasbourg, the quake measured 7.6 on the Richter
scale.
The observatory said the quake struck Pakistan, west of Karachi,
at latitude 25.56 degrees north and longitude 65.6 degrees east
at 03.17 GMT.
