Worried parents await news from Bhuj

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JAN. 26. Tension and anxiety have gripped the parents of 24 students of a design school in Bangalore, who had gone on a study tour to Bhuj in Gujarat, the epicentre of Friday's earthquake.

Even as news of the quake swept through the city, the kin of the first year foundation students of the Shristi School of Design, Yelahanka, tried to get information about their whereabouts. But till late on Friday night, none of them was able to establish any link with the students.

The students, in the 19-20 age group, had left for Gujarat along with three faculty members on January 12. They were expected to reach Bhuj town on Friday and leave the same day by bus to Ahmedabad before returning to Bangalore on January 28.

The design school's executive director, Ms. Geeta Narayanan, hoped all the students were safe. ``We don't expect any problems. There is only a telecommunication failure, and once it is established, we are sure they will contact us,'' she told The Hindu.

Shashwati, one of the students, had called her parents last night from Bhuj. ``But after the earthquake, there has been no news,'' her father said.
