Grid collapse averted

NEW DELHI, JAN. 26. A major collapse of the power system in western India, following a sharp increase in transmission frequency on account of the earthquake in Gujarat, was averted as a result of the efficient coordination of the regional grid.

``A major grid collapse in western region was averted due to timely intervention and efficient coordination of western regional load despatch centre (WRLDC),'' the Power Minister, Mr. Suresh Prabhu's office said in a statement here.

The regional system suffered a loss of 2,600 MW even as the collapse was averted at the time of the quake. Prompt action by the WRLDC prevented a grid collapse and tripping of nuclear units at Kakrapar and Tarapur atomic power stations, it said.
