President hosts reception at Mughal Gardens

NEW DELHI, JAN. 26. The President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, and his wife, Mrs. Usha Narayanan, today hosted a reception at the Mughal Gardens of Rasthrapati Bhavan here to mark the Republic Day.

The Algerian President, Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was the chief guest at the Republic Day function, attended the reception.

The Vice-President, Mr. Krishan Kant, and his wife, the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, the BJP president, Mr. Bangaru Laxman, the Congress president, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, the former President, Mr. R. Venkataraman, former Prime Ministers, Mr. Chandra Shekhar and Mr. P.V. Narasimha Rao, and Mrs. Vimala Sharma, widow of former President, Shankar Dayal Sharma, were among those who attended the reception.

The Union Home Minister, Mr. L.K. Advani, did not attend. He rushed to Gujarat following the earthquake there.

A large number of Union Ministers, MPs, leaders of political parties, senior civil and defence officers and diplomats were present.
