Putin hails ties with India

MOSCOW, JAN. 26. The Russian President, Mr. Vladimir Putin, has
called for closer cooperation with India in the new century.
In congratulatory messages on the occasion of India's Republic
Day, Mr. Putin expressed confidence that the bilateral strategic
partnership would become a key element of international relations
in the 21st century.
``Today, when a new multipolar world was being formed, it is
especially important that our countries enhance interaction in
bilateral and global affairs,'' Mr. Putin said in a telegram to
the President, Mr. K. R. Narayanan.
In a message to the Prime Minister, Mr. A. B. Vajpayee, the
Russian leader said the two countries were united by the
closeness and in some cases coincidence of the fundamental
national interests and firm commitment to ideals of peace and
democratic development.Mr. Putin said his talks in New Delhi
confirmed the high level of confidence and consent existing
between the two countries.
