Women take out rally against sale of illicit liquor
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, JAN. 25. Several women from the slums of
Bathkammakunta, on Friday, took out a rally protesting against
the sale of illicit liquor and demanding action against those
selling it. The protesters paraded an effigy representing the
evils of liquor in the lanes and bylanes of the adjoining
colonies and later burnt it at the Bathkammakunta cross roads.
Lending support to the agitation, activists of the All-India
Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) also participated in the
rally and raised slogans demanding the authorities to immediately
check the sale of illicit liquor in the State. During a fortnight
long agitation, the agitators from Bathkammakunta had raided and
closed down several illicit liquor outlets there.
They also distributed pamphlets to the residents of surrounding
colonies and sought their cooperation in the agitation. `Though
we have succeeded in stopping the sale of illicit liquor in
Bathkammakunta, some persons were found procuring it from outlets
located in surrounding localities. We intend to get these outlets
closed too,' said a local activist, Mr. Kistaiah.
The AIDWA city secretary, Ms. T. Jyothi, who led the rally, said
similar rallies would be organised in different parts of the city
against the manufacture and sale of illicit liquor.
