Lt.Governor gives away medals

PONDICHERRY, JAN. 26. The Pondicherry Lt. Governor, Dr. Rajani Rai, today unfurled the national flag and took the guard of honour presented by the Pondicherry Armed police. She was accompanied by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. J. P. Singh.

She gave away the President's police medals for meritorious services to Mr. P. Purushothaman, and Mr. R. Perumal, at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex at Uppalam. Tableau from various departments of the Pondicherry administration participated in the parade.

The Chief Minister, Mr. P. Shanmugham, Ministers, MLAs, freedom fighters, political party leaders, French representatives in Superior Council of French Parliament, officials, Secretaries and others witnessed the parade.

The Lt. Governor inspected the march past presented by the contingents of police, Home Guards, NCC, school children, Scouts and Guides and also members of the Children Traffic Corps (both boys and girls). She gave away the Lieutenant Governor`s Police Medals to the Assistant Sub Inspector of Police, Mr. P. Ramachandran, and the traffic constable, Mr. S. Seetharaman. The Station Officer of Fire Service, Mr. B. Ponnuswamy, was presented with the Fire Service Medal.

Heads of the Immaculate Heart of Mary`s Girls Higher Secondary School, St. Joseph of Cluny, Vivekananda, Amalorpavam, St.Patricks, Don Bosco Higher Secondary Schools and Servite English, Immaculate Heart of Mary`s Girls High Schools of Villianoor and Ariankuppam, St. Joseph Girls High School Muthialpet and the Government High School at Thattachavady and the Veeramamunivar jointly received the Chief Minister`s rolling trophy for achieving cent per cent results in the SSLC or Matriculation Public Examinations held in March 2000.

The Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School was presented the Education Minister`s rolling trophy for presenting the second best results in the matriculation examination.

Principals of the Thiruvalluvar Government Girls Higher Secondary School and Manimegalai Higher Secondary School received the Education Minister`s rolling trophy for Government institutions.

The Archbishop Rolling trophy and the Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor Rolling trophy was presented to seven schools (five private and two Government schools) in recognition of their performance in the plus two examination. The Government High School at Madukarai was presented the Lion Professor Ambady Narayanan Rolling trophy for the institution's performance in academic field.

The Lt. Governor gave away cash awards to four field staff of the health department in recognition of their exemplary services.

Republic Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour in the headquarters of the Pondicherry unit of the TMC with the party unit president, Mr. V. Balaji, MLA, recalling the services of great freedom fighters.

The Cooperation Minister, Mr. Theni C.Jayakumar, the Social Welfare Minister, Mr. M. Kandaswamy, and other party cadres were present at the celebrtation.

Pondy University

The Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University, Dr. V.T. Patil, stressed the need to preserve the integration of the nation. Unfurling the national flag in the University campus at Kalapet, he called upon the University employees to dedicate themselves for the cause of the nation. Dr. S. Jayachandran, Registrar of the University, and other university staff were present.
