dated January 28, 1951: Anniversary of Republic
(there being no issue on the 27th)
Marshal Stalin, Prime Minister, USSR had sent the following to
Mr. Nehru on January 26: ``On the occasion of the National day of
the Indian Republic, I request you, Mr. Prime Minister, to accept
my congratulations and best wishes to you personally and to the
Indian people.''
Message from Mr. Loy Headerson, U.S. Ambassador in India, to Mr.
Nehru read: ``...It gives me great pleasure to express to you my
admiration for the inestimable contribution you have made on
behalf of the well-being of the people of India and of the entire
world.''
Greatness of Thyagaraja:
Inaugurating the Thyagaraja festival on January 26 at
Tiruvayyaru, about seven miles from Tanjore, Mr.
Rajagopalachariar, Minister for Home Affairs, Government of
India, observed: ``Present day ills of our country can be traced
to the abandonment of Bhakti by the people. Saint Thyagaraja has
shown the world an easy way of reaching God through music.'' It
was here that the saint lived and sang his soul- stirring Kritis
ranging from simple divyanamavalis to complex and recondite
pancharatna compositions in praise of Lord Sri Rama.''
The proceedings began with singing of ``Rarama'' by Messrs
Ramanuja Iyengar and Musiri Subramania Aiyar. Mr. Rajamannar sang
an invocation before delivering his welcome address.
