City students in Bhuj safe

BANGALORE, JAN. 27. The 24 students and three faculty members of the City-based Srishti School of Design, who were in Bhuj, Gujarat, the epicentre of Friday's earthquake, are reported to be safe. Three officials of the school have left for Ahmedabad to bring back the students from the disaster zone.

Ms. Poonam Kasthuri, a faculty member accompanying the students, called the school on Saturday afternoon, confirming the safety of all the students. A non-governmental organisation had arranged food and shelter for them at Bhuj, a school official told The Hindu.

The school's Executive Director, Mr. Prem Chandavarkar; the Managing Trustee, Ms. Geeta Narayanan; and the Fine Arts Coordinator, Mr. Ravindra Gutta; have gone to Ahmedabad.

Among the students in Bhuj are Bhavana Vyas, Vinayak Varma, Vanditha Shangi, Tara M. Thomas, Sunando, Kunal Sen, Smriti, Sriranjini, Shashwati, Raolf, Priyanka, Thomas Abraham, Nishitha, Manjari, Thomas T.K., Prathima Chouhan, Mrilalini Tandon, Divya Viswanathan, Jayalakshmi Shettar and Kanika Kini. Accompanying the students were the faculty members, Ms. Poonam, Mr. Soumitra Sarkar and Mr. Raghavendra Rao.

The group left on an educational trip on January 12. The students, all from the first-year foundation course, were to have left Bhuj for Ahmedabad on Friday before returning to Bangalore tomorrow.

Parents and relatives of the students were still anxious and were in constant touch with the school authorities to ensure speedy return of the students.
