South African relief team coming
By M.S. Prabhakara
CAPE TOWN, JAN. 31. A 31-member South African team, trained in
rescue and relief operations, is leaving for Mumbai later today
en route to the earthquake-affected areas in Gujarat. According
to Mr. Andr Tomlinson, a team member, the initiative has been
supported by the international medical relief agency, Medical
Rescue International, and the South African Indian community.
The members were drawn from all segments of South African society
and three were involved in the relief operations in the 1998
Turkey earthquake, he said. Two search dogs belonging to the
South African Police Service are also part of the team.
