It is 'fun' time at Presidency
TIME FOR another action-packed week full of fests. Kicking off
today, are two fests. Both women's colleges. Both inter-
collegiate fests.
First, Anna Adarsh College for Women will shift gear to the
official inauguration and onstage events of `Neherika' after
being done with the offstage events on Wednesday.
The same afternoon, Women's Christian College will kickstart
`Festeve 2001' with Nrityanjali (Indian Classical Music).
And the very next morning, TIDEL Park auditorium will set the
stage for Institute of Technology and Management's (ITM) fest
Manaquest 2001.

``Donate Blood when others need it. Donate organs when you dont
need them,'' was the word that went around Madras University when
VOX management, the student body of the department of Management
Studies, organised a blood and organ donation camp in association
with Madras Medical Mission.
About 104 units of blood were collected and 77 volunteers
registered for organ donation, the head of the department, Dr. M.
R. Sathyamoorthy, said.

There were at least three women's colleges that had quite a
happening week. Bharathi Women's College organised a three day
workshop on `Global Information Systems for Geo-modelling'.
Among those who spoke were Dr. N. Sivagnanam, HOD of Geography,
Madras University, Dr. T. Venugopal, Director, Institute of
Remote Sensing, Anna University, Prof. Prema Swaminathan, HOD of
Geography and Prof. V. Jayalakshmi, Principal of the college.
Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women organised a seminar
of `Ethics of Globalisation' in which Mr. Suresh Krishna,
Chairman, TVS Fasteners, Mr. N. Ram, Editor of `Frontline' and
Mr. A. Somasundaram, Regional Director, RBI, participated. Stella
Maris College took home the first prize of Rs. 4,000 while
students of MOP Vaishnav College finished second, and got richer
by Rs. 2,500.
The Pi-Beta club of the Maths department of MOP Vaishnav College
organised `Euphoria-2001'.
Here, it was the turn of Ethiraj College to take home the overall
trophy.

National Institute of Educational Development Systems (NIEDS)
concluded its training programme on `Entrepreneurship in IT
Industry' on January 31.
The Institute is in the process of ``creating 10,000 self-
employment IT centres that will educate 5,00,000 students every
year''.

At Presidency College it was `gallata' time once more. A little
different, though. Guess what the theme of their inter-collegiate
cultural competition was? `Hand to the Handicapped'. Presidency
College paid rich tributes to the differently abled on January 29
and 30.
Presidency College guys can do more than go on strike, they
proved. Another feather in their cap, T. Venkatesh, ex-general
secretary of the college donated 175 mini radios and cassettes
for the visually impaired students.

If Presidency is at it, can Pachaiyappa's be far behind? The
Pach-Quest Millennium meet, an inter-collegiate quiz competition
was Chennai's own version of the Maha Kumbh as students of
different colleges congregated at the college campus on EVR
Periyar Salai. The Pachaiyappan's came first, but let Ethiraj and
New College go home with the second and third prizes. Guess who
the highest scorer was? It was rumoured that Dr. Parimel Azhagan,
English professor of Pachaiyappa's and the quiz master made the
highest pile-up.

Rasayanotsav 2001. The banner put up by the Chemistry department
of the DG Vaishnav College flew high in Arumbakkam last week.
Nearly 12 colleges participated in this chemical reaction and the
students went home with various accolades late that evening on
January 25.

The Tamil Nadu inter-dental college cultural fest `Sangamam 2001'
and their sports meet `Survivors 2001' were held early last week.
Sponsored by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, the twin
events were held at Meenakshi Ammal Dental College. Over 750
students from eight colleges from the State participated in
various competitions.

Barathi Manram, a Tamil association of the St.Thomas Hall, Madras
Christian College celebrated 45 years of existence and to
commemorate, brought out a book `Tamil Environment in the New
Century'. If you are wondering whether it is about environment or
Tamil, well, its a bit of both. The Tamil compilation is a
putting together of seminar and lectures in the fields of
literature, science and technology. Dr. Alexander Mantramurti,
MCC principal and Mr. Balamurugan, treasurer of the association
participated in the formal book launch function.

As you read this, the ISTE students of Velammal Engineering
College are conducting a seminar on `leadership'. This comes a
day after their technical seminar on `Virtual prototyping and
rapid prototyping' organised by the Society of Mechanical
Engineers of the college.
