Women's National from Feb. 6

CHENNAI, JAN. 31. The first ever women's National and the 16th sub-junior (boys) championship, organised by the Tamil Nadu Amateur Boxing Association, will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium from February 6 to 11.

About 150 women from 22 states, and 300 sub-juniors from 28 teams are taking part in the championship.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. P.W.C. Davidar, President, Tamil Nadu State Amateur Boxing Association, said that those women who perform well in this championship will get an opportunity to participate in the Asian Championship in April/May 2001, and the sub-juniors will get a chance to participate in the under-17 World Championship in Germany in September.

Mentioning that each State is fielding eight boxers, Mr. A.K. Karunakaran, Secretary, State Amateur Boxing Association, said the sub-juniors section will have five age-group categories and 30 weight groups while the women's section will have 13 weight categories.

While expressing the association's inability to get the title sponsor for the event, Mr. Davidar, however, said the only solace was that Coca-Cola had come forward to assist as the publicity sponsor.

The bouts will take place in two rings simultaneously and Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu is providing the infrastructure.

Students and faculties from Visual Communication Department, SRM College of Arts and Science, will co-ordinate with the media to ensure good coverage.
