Colours from continents
MEANINGFUL RIOT of colours and abstraction. When painters artists
from different parts of the world converge, what else can one
expect ?
The location was the Government College for Arts and Crafts and
the occasion, an international camp. Diverse styles, contrasting,
yet harmonic patterns and moving undertones. It was inspiring and
educative too. The organiser, the Lalit Kala Academy, says it was
the first of its kind in the city. Till February 5, the artists
will be in action at a studio set up in the institute. Slide
shows, lectures, art demos and interactions also form part of the
schedule.
These artists are among the participants at the 10th Triennale -
India, an international exhibition of contemporary art in New
Delhi. The line-up of Indian artists include Vinod Kumar (New
Delhi), Babu Xavier (Thiruvananthapuram), Vijay Shinde (Mumbai),
Rameshwar Singh (Jaipur, Rajasthan) and Chennai's very own Prof.
R. B. Bhaskaran (principal of the college) and P. Srinivasan.
There are foreign participants too. And what do they have to say
about the city. ``Chennai (pronounced Chinnai) seems to be cool.
It can appreciate painting as an art. Not like Vienna where focus
is more on installations,'' said Christy Astuy, from Vienna,
Austria. Would you like to live here? ``Well, that is difficult.
Europe, with its varied culture, has a greener pasture for art.
But I would surely love to come here often.''
The other foreign artists are Chen Zui (China), Carmen Poenaru
(Romania) and Yunis Bin-Abdul Rahman Al-Raisi (Oman). The studio
is open to public between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
