Refugees: Pak. appeals to U.N.

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, FEB. 1. As the flood of Afghan refugees pouring into Pakistan threatens to go out of hand, the Pakistan military ruler and Chief Executive, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, today appealed to the United Nations to launch a programme to provide relief assistance inside Afghanistan.

The Pakistan authorities on the border of Afghanistan have been engaged in a tug of war with the Afghan refugees who are desperate to cross over to escape harsh conditions back home. Gen. Musharraf called on the United Nations Development Programme country chief, Mr. Onder Yucer, here and expressed concern over the grave humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

The statement put by a U.N. agency on Wednesday that on the night of January 29 alone over 110 people perished in western part of Afghanistan has clearly brought out the plight of the displaced Afghans.
