Fun tempered by sympathy
FUN AND frolic was not the only objective of Saarang 2001, IIT's
annual cultural fest. It also lent a helping hand to the quake
victims.
As the curtains came down on Sunday, an appeal was sent out to
the youth to contribute generously to the relief fund set up by
the Institute. The final event of the five-day extravaganza, Mr.
and Miss Saarang, had a celebrity panel judging the participants.
The cast included cine-star Madhavan, Rehanae (fashion designer)
and model Medha. all of them contributed to the fund in a box
that was kept on the ramp. Contributions came from other quarters
too. Each catering stall put up at the venue donated Rs. 50 each
towards the cause. Sai Santhanam, who enthused the audience with
his mimicry, too chipped in.
Coming back to the event, an IITian and a Mount Carmalite were
crowned Mr. and Miss Saarang respectively. Incidentally,
Aishwarya Rajnikant was one of the finalists but was edged out in
the selection for the final three.
Three pro shows, over 8,000 participants from 30 colleges of
South India, more than a lakh turnout - all happened in five days
of hectic activity.
